Functional Medicine is a novel Medical Specialization that started in the USA in 1993 and remains largely unknown to the public.
It was only a few years ago that scientists managed to “see” inside the cell, the smallest structural unit of our body, and quantify any microelement that is insufficient or in excess within it.
Sciences like Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry and Biotechnology among others, managed to produce novel and innovative diagnostic tests which Functional Medicine incorporates in daily practice.
We are grateful to Classic Medicine for treating medical conditions in the acute phase and saving lives through Invasive – Surgical techniques but at the same time we experience its limits in treating Chronic and Autoimmune Diseases.
Functional Medicine is governed by the following fundamental principles:
- Employs Innovative Molecular-level Diagnostic tests to identify possible deficiencies, imbalances and deviations from the optimal level.
- Supports and strengthens our body’s natural mechanisms of Self-healing and Self-regulation.
- It believes and supports the axiom – that our body can heal or prevent all diseases.
- Health and well-being are not just based on the absence of a disease but should be our physical state.
- Every person is different and unique and deserves a personalized approach and treatment.
- Primary Health Care System
Functional Medicine uses extensive Medical Histories, which can help the Health Specialist collect all the required information about an individual’s current and past health status and all other required elements that can affect health (nutrition, daily habits, exercise etc.).
Specialized diagnostic tests at a Molecular and cellular level identify deficiencies and imbalances.
The proposed therapeutic protocols aim to restore insufficiencies at a molecular level, “recalibrate” the cellular homeostasis and bring the Immune system to an optimal level of function.
Finally, Functional Medicine can treat Chronic and Autoimmune diseases and ultimately restore hitherto Hormonal and Biochemical abnormalities.
